Curriculum - Numeracy

The learning of numeracy creates opportunities for and enriches the lives of all young Australians. Numeracy develops the capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals for further mathematical study and careers options.

Warrnambool East P.S. aims to instill in our students an appreciation of the power that mathematics and mathematical reasoning has on their everyday lives.

The Mathematics curriculum focuses on developing increasing understanding, fluency, logical reasoning, analytical thinking and problem solving skills. These capabilities enable our students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematical strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.  There is also a focus on the language of mathematics and learning by doing can build an understanding of mathematical concepts and language with real meaning.

At Warrnambool East P.S. teachers implement rigorous assessment and planning processes, to ensure teaching is differentiated. Planning occurs in a collaborative environment, based on the Victorian Curriculum Achievement Standards, proficiency scales and student data. Numeracy is taught for a minimum of 5 hours per week.

Interventions based on explicit teaching of mathematical skills is provided in response to available resourcing and student need.
