Curriculum - Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander perspectives

Exposure to and engagement with, Koorie and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage will enrich all Australians and strengthen our unique identity.

We at WEPS, acknowledge that as non-Indigenous people teaching about Indigenous cultures, lands, and histories, no amount of study, experience, or learning could ever be a substitute for the lived experience, knowledge, and connection to Country that Indigenous peoples hold. We have taken our first steps towards working and walking alongside community to strengthen cultural awareness and understanding at our school.

Through resources developed by and alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we endeavour to explore Countries, places, histories, arts, communities, and peoples from First Nations Perspectives.

As with all classes in the school, we welcome family involvement if you have knowledge or skills you’d like to share.

We would like to acknowledge that Warrnambool East Primary School has been built on the traditional lands of the Peek Whurrong of the Eastern Maar Nation and wish to acknowledge them as Traditional Owners and custodians of the land and waterways. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
