Extra-curricula - Physical Education

The Physical and Sport Education program at Warrnambool East Primary School is an engaging, extensive, well-balanced and above all inclusive program. Our goal is to nurture in our students a love of physical activity and play, instil a need for physical fitness and develop a sense of fair play and co-operation. The program aims to explore physical activity and movement, whilst developing students’ personal and social skills, in line with the Victorian Curriculum.

Throughout weekly Physical Education lessons, students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 develop their Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) through many effective learning experiences. ‘Play with purpose games’ allow students to develop co-operative and collaborative skills, grow in confidence and develop locomotor and manipulative skills. We aim to refine the following FMS: catch, kick, overhand throw, bounce, punt, forehand strike, two-hand side-arm strike, run, jump, leap, dodge, and skip. These skills are not only necessary in preparing students for middle and senior school PE learning, but we also want to set our students up cognitively, physically, and socially, for lifelong active and healthy living.

Students in Years 3 and 4 will build on these FMS to develop more complex skills and movement challenges, as they transition to a ‘game sense’ approach to learning. Through small sided, modified games, we begin to connect games of a similar nature with common game strategies. This game centred approach allows for greater cognitive development as we use questioning and rule and space modifications to teach about the game, through the game.

Students in Years 5 & 6 progress even further and apply the game sense approach to major games and sports. With a focus on mastery of FMS, students are also encouraged to explore decision making and movement knowledge in games and sports. We aim to ensure all of our students have the skills, knowledge, and social capabilities to try any sport they want to, when they approach Secondary School and beyond.

YEAR 5 & 6 Sport

Year 5 & 6 students participate in additional sporting events throughout the year. Students extend their learning in the following sports: Volleyball, Tennis, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, T20 Blast Cricket, Tee Ball, Netball, Soccer and Australian Rules Football.
